A project developed by Calgary Transit to provide tactile direction indicators (“TDI”), Calgary Transit created a pilot project for directional cues on 3 transit rail platforms for its blind and visually impaired riders. The city needed something extremely durable that could handle -45C (-46F) temps up to +45C (+113F) with lots of expansion and contraction. Their choice: Vanguard GuideStrip. 2,600 LF (792 metres) of 12 inch (600mm) GuideStrip. Contracted for 8 – 10 days, the job was completed in 7.

Description
“…Tactile surface indicators create a change in texture and can be felt under foot or with a cane and are easily recognized by customers who experience low vision or vision loss. Among the changes to surface texture are raised lines which act as a warning to stop, smoother lines that indicate the path is safe for walking, and right angle turns to assist with wayfinding. The yellow line strips with a bumpy surface you are used to seeing at the edge of the platform is another kind of tactile surface indicator.”
